Placement & Travel

Can I choose which camp I go to?

You can certainly state your preferences (type of camp, location), but you cannot choose a specific camp. You will be matched with a camp based on your skills, experience, and the camp’s needs, ensuring the best fit.

What is the accommodation like?

Most staff live in shared cabins with other counselors and campers. It is a rustic, authentic, and essential part of the camp experience.

Can I travel after camp?

Yes! The J-1 Visa allows you up to 30 days before and after your camp contract to travel and explore anywhere in the United States. This is a huge perk of the program.

What happens if I get sick or injured?

Every camp has trained medical staff on-site. Your SAFRICAMPS program fee includes comprehensive health insurance for the duration of your contract, so you are covered for medical emergencies.

Application & Visa

Why do I have to pay program fees?

The program fee covers essential services that make your trip possible, including J-1 Visa sponsorship, comprehensive health insurance, 24/7 support while you are in the U.S., and personalized guidance from our team at SafriCamps.

When is the best time to apply?

The sooner, the better! Recruitment is ongoing, but applying between September and December gives you the best chance of securing a placement at a top camp.

Can I apply with a friend?

No, all applications are processed individually based on skills and camp needs. However, if you and a friend both get placed at the same camp, it will be up to the Camp Director’s discretion if they can place you in the same cabin or team.
