Document Preparation

Prepare for the Visa Interview

Once you are placed with a camp, SAFRICAMPS will help you gather these essential documents for your J-1 visa interview at the US Consulate:

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your stay.
  • DS-2019 Form: The Certificate of Eligibility provided by the sponsor. This is the most important document.
  • SEVIS I-901 Fee Receipt: Proof that you have paid the mandatory SEVIS fee.
  • DS-160 Confirmation: The final printed confirmation page of your online visa application.
  • Photo: One 5x5cm (2x2in) colour photo meeting US visa specifications.
  • Consulate Fee Receipt: Proof of payment for the visa application fee.
  • Camp Contract: Signed employment letter from your US camp.

Important Personal Documentation

Ensure you have copies and originals of these personal documents when traveling:

  • Proof of Funds: Bank statements showing you can support yourself until your first paycheck.
  • Travel Itinerary: Your return flight ticket confirmation.
  • South African Ties: Documents proving you intend to return home (e.g., job offer, university enrollment proof, lease agreement).
  • Police Clearance: Your South African Police Clearance Certificate.

Digital Backups

Before you leave, scan and email yourself copies of your passport, J-1 Visa, and DS-2019 form. This is crucial in case of loss or theft while traveling.
